Place Your Bid on This 1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 455 Super Duty
There are plenty of modern choices for muscle cars, but there's just something about a classic. This 1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 455 Super Duty is one of the original high-performance muscle cars and it's about to hit the auction block. It arrived on the market as emissions regulations became tougher, which dropped compression ratios along with quarter-mile times. Pontiac managed to get their 7.5-liter V8 approved despite a very anti-muscle car environment. According to Silodrome, testing by Car and Driver yielded a quarter-mile time of 13.751 seconds, even with an automatic transmission. RELATED: See the 1974 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Pontiac may have found a way to produce the car despite emissions regulations, but it couldn't do a thing about the oil crisis. Gas prices went through the roof and suddenly a V8 was a very costly choice. Pontiac only built 212 units of its powerful Trans Am 455 Super Duty.
This example is a restored model with its original factory color scheme and matching numbers on the engine and chassis. Although we know 212 were built, no one knows just how many survive to this day or if there are many out there that look as good as this one. It will be going up for auction through Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas at the end of September. There's no reserve, but it's not going to come cheap.
