You Can Buy a Team Lotus Formula One Car on Craigslist Right Now
There are certain things you expect to find on Craigslist—things like used cars, oddly revealing missed connections, and a freebie couch or two. A Formula One racecar, however, is not one of those expected things, but it’s just what you’ll find listed on Craigslist in Birmingham, Alabama. Specifically, it is a 2011 Lotus T128, which was built by Team Lotus for use in the 2011 Formula One season. Team Lotus returned to the F1 grid in 2010 and 2011, and was eventually rolled into the Caterham F1 team in 2012, which explains why this car bears a green Caterham livery. By comparison, today’s “Lotus F1 Team” grew out of the old Renault F1 team. RELATED: Check Out the 2015 Lotus E23 Formula One Car
The price for this piece of Formula One history? Expectedly, it’s not cheap at $95,000—Oh, and for that you don’t even get an engine. This Lotus is an engine-less show car, which makes it one very expensive carbon fiber monocoque sculpture. In 2011, it would have housed a 2.4-liter Renault V8—capable of 750 horsepower at a dizzying 18,000 rpm. Yikes.
No mention is made of its racing history, if any, however Team Lotus’ top finishing position during 2011 was a trio of 13th place finishes earned in Bahrain, Monaco, and Italy.

Despite the lack of an engine, the Lotus does retain its high-tech carbon fiber suspension, a full aerodynamics package, a set of Pirelli P Zero tires, a button-festooned F1 steering wheel, and a Red Bull seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox. That either makes it one great piece of wall art—providing you have a wall big enough and strong enough—or the ultimate candidate for an engine swap.
