Watch this Diesel Truck Ignite on a Dyno
Most dyno pulls are uneventful. The car is strapped down, the person inside the car starts the pull, and after they’re done, they get to see how much power they’ve made. It’s a rather boring affair to watch, unless the car is something special. However, sometimes, dyno pulls can go bad, really fast, as the owner of this nitrous-fed diesel truck found out. Over the years, we’ve seen countless dyno runs fail. Most of the time, the straps aren’t tightened down enough, and the car lurches off the platform. Or the car is running entirely too much boost and there’s a large explosion, followed by the loud sobbing of the owner in the corner of the shop. However, this next video is one that makes all those other dyno fails look like child’s play. RELATED: The Diesel Frontier Is The Way To Go
So what just happened? According to the video description, this nitrous-fed diesel truck was at diesel dyno challenge at a shop called No Zone Diesel. These competitions are usually held to see how much power each of the trucks make, and as you saw, this one made a lot. That is, before it blew up. The owner of the truck, Shawn Baca, and was set to make one of the most powerful runs of the day. Then things went wrong, ending in the massive fireball you just witnessed.

With diesel trucks such as this one, a dyno can be extremely hazardous. Because a dyno doesn’t load up like the street, drivers first need to spool the turbos slowly. If they just mat the gas pedal, things like this tend to happen. However, that’s not what happened here. Shawn was correctly getting his truck up to speed and everything was going well. However, he then hit the nitrous entirely too early. That’s why you hear the turbos go from a gradual spool to all out insanity in a matter of a few seconds.
If you watch the video again, and go exactly to 0:36 seconds in, you’ll see a small explosion, hear the engine shoot up to super high RPM’s, and then the motor practically shut off as the entire engine bay engulfs into flames. We’re guessing this is definitely not what Shawn had in mind when he got up that morning.
