The History of the Ford Mustang's Power Fluctuations
The iconic Ford Mustang has gone through a total of six generations over the course of 50 years. And over that course of time, the Mustang has seen massive power gains, but it has not been a constant upward trend. More than once, the Mustang was victim to reductions in output. The chart has two sections in it, the first being a linear graph showing the approximate horsepower of each Mustang generation over time. It begins in 1964, when the Mustang was first introduced, culminating with the sixth-generation Ford Mustang that was just released last year.
The linear graph is interesting because you can see the malaise era of automotive manufacturing, and the beginning of the oil crisis here in the U.S. detailed by a massive power loss in the car. However, after that drop, the Mustang’s power begins to slowly tick upward, until around 1999 and again 2004, when the horsepower gains are truly staggering.

For a Mustang aficionados and plain old fans alike this graphic is a great way to provide a general understanding of Mustang history. For the average consumer, it’s an interesting look into the history of one of the most iconic cars of all time.
