Which Car Has The All-Time Highest Mileage?
Some people love new cars and have something different parked in their driveways every few years. Others prefer to keep their cars going as long as possible. Hitting 100,000 might be a milestone for some, but there are cars that have gone over a million miles and are still out there on the street. These are the cars owners have lovingly taken care of for years. We're not talking commercial vehicles, but private vehicles that you might find in your neighbor's garage. There are more than a few million-milers in existence, but there is one that is generally accepted as the mileage king. RELATED: Check Out The World's Largest Scale Model Mustang Collection
That car is a 1966 Volvo P1800s that belongs to one Irv Gordon. The car set a Guinness World Record when it hit 3 million miles on September 18, 2013 at 4 pm near Anchorage, Alaska. It's still going and Irv has his sights set on 4 million miles. He bought the car back in 1966 and it cost him an entire year's salary. Over the years, he's put a lot of time and money into his car to keep it rolling, but it's never been restored and has been in constant use.
The engine was rebuilt at 680,000 miles in 1978 and again at 2.7 million miles in 2011. Gordon uses only OEM parts and is religious about maintenance, changing the oil every 3500 miles and following all the recommendations in the owner's manual. Although he has replaced parts over the years, much of it is still original including the doors, fenders, hood, trunk, drive shaft, axles, and wheels.
