This Bicycle is a Keg Carrying Bar on Wheels
If your three favorite things involve bicycles, beer, and pizza…perhaps a trip out to Portland, Oregon is in order. Why? Because that’s where you’ll find this. It’s called the “BikeBar,” and as one might deduce, it’s a bicycle packed with a mobile bar top, two kegs, dual beer taps, and room for a few pizzas stacked on the back. If you’re having an “I wish I would have invented that” type of moment, you’re likely not alone. Nevertheless, the honor of this radical invention goes to Portland’s own Metrofiets bike company, which built the BikeBar on behalf of the Hopworks Urban Brewery. Metrofiets began building handmade, instantly recognizable “cargo bikes” in 2007, and beneath the BikeBar is the core of the product. The steel frames are built to carry up to 400 pounds of gear, plus a rider, and comes available in two “Portland Pickup” models–an eight-speed and a ten-speed variant. Up front, the standard bikes carry a shovel-like cargo box, which can be equipped with a bench seat, three-point seatbelts, and a rain cover for ferrying dry cargo or kids.
This BikeBar frame has been stretched even further, to a sizable nine and a half feet long, in order to substitute beer for cargo box, and according to The Oregonian, it was built with sustainability in mind. The bicycle bar top was crafted using wood that had been recycled from a Hopworks building renovation, and if you look closely, the beer tap handles are made of old bicycle wheel hubs. The onboard drink is said to be a Hopworks beer, organic and sustainably brewed. No word on the pizza, but after a few choice beers, the quality or type of said pie doesn't really matter–does it?
