330HP Volkswagen Drag Van Looks Classy, Goes Like Stink
A wise person once said, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” I’d like to append that saying with the addition of ‘Volkswagen Van’, because although this 1967 VW looks like a garage queen dressed to the nines… it’s actually a serious straight-line competitor. YouTube user 19Bozzy92 filmed this Volkswagen Transporter High Top during last year’s Hills Race, a drag racing event featuring blisteringly quick American cars and air-cooled Volkswagens, at Italy’s Rivanazzano Dragway. Driven by Pascal Amodru, the tall Transporter lines up against a tuned Beetle and gives it quite the run through the quarter mile. Take a look. RELATED: It's New! That oomph comes courtesy of a naturally aspirated 2332cc Type 1 flat-four engine, tuned to a punchy 230 horsepower and aided by a shot of nitrous for an extra 100 horses. Despite its van appearance, you wouldn’t exactly call it a sleeper though, especially since there’s a highly suspect exhaust pipe erupting out the back.
The van’s quarter mile time during this pass isn’t given, though its best quarter mile run is a claimed 12.10 seconds at 111.56 mph. That’s swift by most standards, and might as well be light speed compared to a standard Volkswagen van. For comparison’s sake, a Dodge Challenger Hellcat will run the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds (10.8 on drag radials)… with more than double this car’s horsepower.
