Watch the Tesla P85D and Charger Hellcat Hit the Quarter Mile, Officially
By now you’ve probably seen the infamous Dodge Hellcat vs. Tesla P85D video. The muscled-up pair hit the strip for a drag race… and it didn’t end well for the Hellcat. The guys over at Motor Trend certainly saw and they wanted to give the duo an official quarter-mile exercise. This is it. In terms of numbers, it’s an equal match up. In the blue corner, weighing in at 4,562 lbs. and with 707 horsepower at the ready – the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. In the red corner, at 4,944 lbs. but with all-wheel-drive and 691 e-ponies – the 2015 Tesla Model S P85D. Which of these heavy hitters is officially America’s ultimate bad ass? It’s a close call. Alas, MT tosses the title to the Hellcat, albeit by a very slim margin. In the quarter-mile test, the Hellcat hits the line in 11.8 seconds at 124.3 mph (launched appropriately in 2nd gear), while the Tesla manages a slightly quicker 11.7 seconds at 113.7 mph. But as Jonny Lieberman rightly puts it, there’s a lot more to both cars than the quarter mile.
The Tesla is technically the quicker and with all-wheel-drive and a 50/50 weight distribution (perhaps the Tesla’s most under-hyped factoid), the P85D is probably the quicker of the two around a circuit. The Hellcat, however, comes away as the more fun to drive of the two. Its exhaust rumbles furiously and at full bore you can see the rear end trying desperately to step out.
The real question is this. Which would you – the cash carrying consumer – rather have?
