Volkswagen Golf R400 Superhatch Could Come to the U.S.
Last year at the Beijing Motor Show, Volkswagen stunned the crowd with a 400+ horsepower Golf. Dubbed the Golf R400, this mini hot hatch supercar was only a concept at the time, something Volkswagen engineers pulled together so they could show everyone what they could do. Volkswagen would never actually build it. Right? Wrong (maybe). Speaking with CAR Magazine, “We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 - we will do this car," said Neusser. "We are in fact in development of it right now,” Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser Volkswagen’s Powertrain chief stated. RELATED: Read More About the Golf R400 Concept
Some of you might be thinking how VW will be able to pull that much power from a 2.0-liter engine. They would likely have to use the five cylinder from the Audi RS3 in order to make reliable horsepower. Speaking with Volkswagen on the Golf R launch, they told us, "there's not that much of a difference between the Golf R and R400 engines." So, adding an extra hundred horsepower shouldn't be all too difficult.
According to our source at Volkswagen, if and when officially confirmed, the Golf R400 will be sold in the United States as well as Europe. And with the price of the Golf R coming in at around $40,000, this Golf R400 will most likely add a $10,000 premium to the price tag. Look for an official announcement around the time of the Beijing Auto Show in June.
