Japan takes nerd culture to a whole new level with festivals and themed restaurants galore.
Their latest contribution will be soaring through the air. Coinciding with the start of Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California and the launch of the newest latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, they've revealed a Star Wars-themed plane.
The plane is a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and it will be flying in the All Nippon Airways fleet looking like a giant R2-D2. The plucky little droid is no longer stuffed into the back of an X-Wing trying to keep Luke from being blasted out of the sky because Artoo is the whole plane.
t's all part of a 5-year project that will culminate in 2020 as the airline launches new routes through the global market. Why R2-D2? According to their website, which now plays the Star Wars fanfare and makes little droid beeps when you hover over buttons, it's because he's number one in reliability. I suppose that's true, but he's also a wise-cracking, sarcastic trouble-maker who rarely does as he's told and makes things difficult for everyone. On second thought, he sort of epitomizes the airline travel experience these days, so he's the perfect choice. Expect to see Artoo take to the skies on international routes this fall.
