Watch a Hellcat Challenger Rematch a Tesla P85D at the Dragstrip
A few months back, two very particular cars lined up for a pass at Florida's Palm Beach International Raceway – a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat and a 2015 Tesla Model S P85D. Much to the amazement of onlookers, the results were far from expected. The driver of the 707-horsepower Hellcat struggled to put the power down, while the 691-horsepower electric Tesla scooted away in silence (see video at bottom). Not a great showing for the internal combustion crowd. While the Model S P85D is an incredible straight line performer, it was obvious that the run was more of a comparison between driver ability than muscle car potential. But since then, the Hellcat driver spent a number of weeks honing their skills and recently called for a rematch. This is that rematch. Unlike the first go-around, the eight-speed Hellcat launches cleanly and keeps pace with the all-wheel-drive Tesla for the length of the track, beating it through the quarter mile in 11.08 seconds at 125 mph. The Model S P85D managed an incredibly respectable 11.92 second pass at 112 mph. There is one catch however, the Hellcat now sports drag radial tires compared to the Tesla which is said to be factory stock.
If there's a takeaway to be had here, it's that both cars are blisteringly quick, both will plaster your noggin against the headrest, and both are fairly evenly matched. All you need to decide is whether you want to fill up at a gas pump or from an outlet.
