The US Just Got a New All-Wheel-Drive VW Golf Wagon

Despite today's slew of shoppers clawing to grab every small or midsize SUV on the dealer lot, the appeal of the station wagon has not disappeared. If you're looking for proof, Volkswagen announced its newest entry for the US market. It's called the 2017 Golf SportWagen Alltrack, and it tacks on all-wheel drive along with some light off-roady looks. Perhaps you'd like one?  Volkswagen hasn't exactly been coy about its ambitions to market the all-wheel-drive wagon in the US. The German auto giant teased an 'Alltrack' concept just last year in New York. However, now it's official, and wagon lovers can expect these models to arrive in showrooms in 2016. The off-road package includes Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, an inch of added ride height, as well as chunkier wheel arches, side sills, and revised bumpers. It's a design not far removed from the larger Passat Alltrack. Volkswagen hasn't revealed which engine will lie underneath the Alltrack trim though. Few of these Alltracks will venture off the beaten path, but at least the mechanicals are there to allow it. The 4Motion system operates in two-wheel drive under normal conditions, but as soon as wheel slip is detected, the Haldex system can send up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels. Further, electronic differential locks at the front and rear axles will brake individual wheels to inhibit slipping and sliding.
