Xavier’s Leading Scorer Works Part-Time as an Uber Driver

It may sound pretty trivial, but the story of Xavier center Matt Stainbrook’s part-time job as an Uber driver might be the most selfless story you read all month. Especially when you consider his team is once again in the NCAA tournament and moving on to the next round. Matt is a fifth-year senior center at Xavier. He’s also the team’s leading scorer and leading rebounder. Matt, though, isn’t on scholarship— that’s because he decided to give his hard-earned basketball scholarship to his little brother, Tim, a sophomore and former walk-on at Xavier. “For my MBA, I think it costs about $14,000 a year. For undergrad, which is what Tim’s in, it’s like ($43,000),” Stainbrook told The Cincinnati Enquirer last November. “I was like, ‘OK, I haven’t had any student loans in the past four years. Tim has worked hard. It’s not like the guy doesn’t deserve it.' It made sense to me.” RELATED: These Lucky Uber Passengers Got Picked up in a McLaren 650S So without a scholarship, Matt is having to work part-time as an Uber driver in Cincinnati. Working 20 to 25 hours a week, Matt says the job “helps me relax,” and also earns him a few extra bucks towards paying off his newfound college loan. Even better, he does it in a Buick Rendezvous, like a boss. As for basketball— Matt was an integral part in the Xavier first round win over Ole Miss, and will be back on the floor when Xavier takes on Gergioa State tonight. So don’t be looking to hop in Matt’s Uber car anytime in the next few days.
