Watch a Dragster Go Airborne at 280 MPH

Larry Dixon is a three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion who suffered a frightening crash during the Top Fuel eliminations. The race was being held at Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals when Dixon's dragster split in half and took to the air part way down the track. The car was doing 280 MPH at the time when it shot 20 feet into the air before managing to come back down on its rear wheels. It looks awful, but Dixon manages to survive with only minor injuries. It's not the first time that Dixon has suffered an accident, but he did fare better than he has in the past. In 2000 at an event held at Memphis International Raceway, he was involved in a similar accident that had him taken by helicopter to the hospital for treatment of a broken leg and eye injuries. After that crash, he was one of the first NHRA drivers to use a head and neck support device. This likely served him well in his most recent crash.
