Lotus Bets on Mercedes Power for 2015 F1 Season

10 points, eighth in the constructor's championship, and with a car that looked terribly unenjoyable to race: that is how the Lotus F1 Team ended their 2014 season, a far cry from the Enstone-based outfit's previous form. But the team has been hustling all winter and they've finally revealed the fruits of their labor.  This is it — the Lotus E23. According to the higher-ups at Lotus, it is an evolution of last year's troublesome E22 chassis with significant revisions in every problem area. The most visual change occurred up at the front – gone is the controversial twin-tusk 'Walrus' nose cone, in favor of a more conventional unit. Arguably the most important mod occurred underneath the skin. RELATED: Check Out These 6 Digital Racecars You Can Only Drive in GT6 For 2015, Lotus parted ways with Renault power and will now source their 1.6-liter V6 hybrid powerplants from Mercedes-Benz, last year's winning constructor and engine supplier. Nick Chester, Lotus' technical director, says the new power units offer more performance, reliability, driveability, as well as key improvements in packaging and cooling. Last year, Lotus' techy front-rear interconnected suspension system (“FRIC”) was banned mid-season, resulting in woeful handling properties in its wake. The current design fits the new regulations, and it's something that returning drivers Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado will hope to master immediately. RELATED: Check out more photos of the 2015 Lotus E23 F1 car “It's time to put the disappointment of last season behind us,” noted Matthew Carter, Lotus F1 Team CEO. “We are ready to return to our rightful place at the pinnacle of the sport.” The newly-minted Lotus E23 will roar to life for the first time on-track during pre-season tests in Jerez, Spain, on February 1-4. Two subsequent test periods will follow in Barcelona, and then the 2015 Formula 1 season begins on March 15 for the Australian Grand Prix.
