First 2016 Shelby GT350R Sells for $1 Million

There are cars that probably shouldn't be road legal. The track-tastic Camaro Z/28 is one of them and the newly revealed Shelby GT350R is another. One lucky bidder at the recent Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, got the opportunity to take the very first one home – VIN #001. The cost? A staggering $1 million. They say 'it pays to be first,' and we would agree. But don't think that Ford will be pocketing that seven-digit winning bid. No, the Blue Oval sold the GT350R with all proceeds benefitting JDRF, a charity focused on Type 1 diabetes research. A rare 1950 GM Futurliner also sold for charity in Scottsdale too, gaveling for $4 million. One thing they won't be able to change is the engine, and what an engine it is. The Shelby GT350R features Ford's new 5.2-liter V8 – the first Ford V8 to feature a flat-plane crankshaft and the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford engine ever produced, though Ford is mum on the exact figures. Expect over 500 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Like its similarly bonkers Z/28 counterpart, the GT350R has plenty of race-inspired tech underneath. According to Ford, the GT350R weighs 130 pounds less than the racy GT350 Track Pack, and gets an aggressive aerodynamics package to match its lack of air-conditioning, stereo system, or rear seats. Though Ford will option those to you, if you like going slower. RELATED: Check out the 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat Need one in your life? Bide your time. The rest of Ford's US customers will have to wait until later this year to nab one of the new limited-edition Shelbys, though they'll likely pay significantly less for theirs.
