The crossover of Huawei and Chery will officially debut on 19 December in China. Called the Luxeed R7 EREV, it is a BMW X6-sized SUV equipped with Huawei's third-generation driver assistance system and an electric powertrain with a petrol range extender.

For the time being it will only be sold in China for the equivalent of around £26,500.

Switch to range extender

Luxeed is a joint project of Chery and Huawei. In this cooperation model, Chery is responsible for platform development and production, while Huawei is in charge of software and sales. As a reminder, Luxeed's current model range includes two electric cars, namely the S7 saloon and the R7 coupe SUV.

The latter is the best-seller, with over 11,000 units delivered in November. As mentioned, however, a range extender variant will soon arrive, a type of power supply that is gaining important market share in China and may soon conquer our market as well.

Luxeed S7 and R7

In terms of styling, the EREV is essentially identical to the electric model. The main differences, in fact, are under the skin. On this new variant we find a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine that acts as a 'generator', since it only serves to send energy to a battery and an electric motor, with the latter driving the car's wheels.

What do you think?

According to initial information, the LFP battery has 36 kWh, is produced by CATL and allows a range in electric mode of about 124 miles in the Chinese CLTC cycle, while the overall range of the powertrain is 975 miles.

There is no information on the drive type and electric motor specifications of the Luxeed R7 EREV. However, we do know that the car will adopt third-generation Huawei Qiankun ADAS systems. As a result, Huawei and Chery 's R7 will be able to drive autonomously at high speeds and on elevated roads across the country and support smart parking. More information on this model will be revealed on 19 December.
