Mercedes Shows New Autonomous Concept and It’s, Um, Something
We’re about to come face to face with a world filled with driverless cars, whether we like it or not. Just try not to burn your retinas while staring at Mercedes’ latest example. It’s called the F015, and if you had to describe it in one word, that word would be ugly. To quote fellow auto writer Brendan McAleer, “Mercedes-Benz attaches wheels to my [computer] mouse, calls it a car.” Yup, that’s about right. It runs on a zero-emission hydrogen-electric hybrid engine that would probably make your mechanic's head explode. Altogether range is rated at 684 miles. At full tilt, the F015 produces 134 horsepower. If you want to run on straight electric power it’ll be pushing out much less, but you’ll be able to accomplish 124 miles before puttering out. But obviously, the main focus is that this thing drives itself. The F015 relies on sensors, lasers, 3D cameras, maps, and Car-2-Car and Car-2-Object communications to take you where you want it to. Without having to drive, you and three friends can kick back in this modernists wet dream of an interior, complete with swiveling seats and touchscreens galore.
Weird/cool concept. But if this is the future of self-driving cars, I’m a little concerned.
