Watch 1200HP Drift Cars Speed Through New Zealand
There are plenty of sights to see when visiting Auckland, New Zealand. But when Red Bull skids into town … there’s really only one main event. And on Dec. 6, that was Red Bull Drift Shifters, a competition that literally skidded right into the middle of town. Auckland’s Quay Street was transformed into somewhat of a gymkhana-style racetrack, replete with obstacles and just enough room for the event’s 16 drivers to get their 1200-horsepower drift cars very, very sideways. Think pinball on four wheels. Watch the video below to see what we’re on about, and turn those speakers up. RELATED: Check out this aggressive Red Bull Lamborghini Gallardo
The event is the brainchild of New Zealander ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, one of the country’s most prolific drifters. Unsurprisingly, the Kiwi came away with the win for 2014 after quite a fast and furious final run in his Mazda RX-8 drift car. Scoring is computed by factoring together drift angle, average speed, and proximity to obstacles – taking out the human bias in judging.
As a result, rear bumpers took a thrashing as drivers pushed their cars to the limit in order to eek out every last point. Want to watch a longer cut? You can find over an hour of Drift Shifters here on the Red Bull site.
