Good news from Wolfsburg - in the presence of plant manager Uwe Schwartz, works council member Jürgen Mahnkopf and employees from various departments, the symbolic starting signal for series production of the Volkswagen Tayron was given there this week.

The SUV, which is a good 4.80 metres long and has the option of seven seats, is the fourth model alongside the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran to roll off the production line at the Volkswagen Group's largest plant. To date, more than 48 million vehicles have been produced at VW in Wolfsburg - more than at any other car factory in the world.

Plant Manager Uwe Schwartz used the "Start of Production" - also known colloquially as SOP - to thank the colleagues involved from all trades: "A vehicle start-up is always a team effort by the entire production team. At Tayron, many cogs interlocked perfectly: from the press shop to the body shop and paint shop to assembly and vehicle completion," praised Schwartz.

According to Schwartz, co-operation with the other departments, such as Procurement or Technical Development, also worked smoothly. This was the only way to ensure that the SOP schedule drawn up a long time ago was adhered to almost exactly to the day. This was despite the challenge of integrating the Tayron into the processes of assembly line 4 while Tiguan production was ongoing. "In the coming weeks, we will do everything we can to successfully ramp up Tayron production," said the plant manager.

Jürgen Mahnkopf, Deputy Chairman of the General and Group Works Council: "The SOP of the Tayron marks an important milestone for the Wolfsburg site. I am certain that our new SUV will build on the success of its predecessor, the Tiguan Allspace, and make an important contribution to securing jobs. Customers in China are already enthusiastic about the vehicle. And the Tayron will also find many buyers in Europe.

Our colleagues in production have done a great job under challenging conditions. This is because they had to master the ramp-ups of the new Tiguan and the Golf product upgrade in parallel with the pre-series production of the Tayron. They did it together, as a team. Thank you on behalf of the entire site."

The first vehicle to roll off the production line this week was a Tayron in the colour Ultra Violet Metallic with a 2.0-litre TDI engine and a panoramic roof. Price in Germany for this vehicle without further extras: €55,310. UK pricing is yet to be released.

In the coming weeks, the showroom and demonstration cars will initially be produced in Wolfsburg for the European Volkswagen dealers. The Volkswagen brand's second-largest SUV in Europe after the Touareg will be on display in their showrooms from March 2025; the first vehicles will be delivered to customers shortly afterwards.

They will soon be able to choose from seven engine versions, including two next-generation plug-in hybrid drives (eHybrid). According to VW, they enable electric ranges of over 62 miles.
