The Subaru Forester Got a Hot STI Treatment
If you’re in the market for a midsized crossover with serious stuff- and people-hauling capabilities, look no further than the plucky Subaru Forester. Need a bit of added sportiness too? Apparently the latest Forester has you covered too. That is, as long as you live in Japan. Meet the 2015 Forester tS, a tuned and focused version built by none other than Subaru Technica International…a group you might know better as STI. Subaru will build 300 tS models for the Japanese market only, and we found a few reasons to be jealous. RELATED: Take a closer look at the all-new 2015 Subaru Forester tS
Underneath, STI lays into the Forester mechanicals and swaps out some old bits for new ones of its own. The Forester dons a tuned STI suspension and 15mm drop, strut tower bar, stiffer rear subframe, tuned vehicle dynamics control system, as well as a Brembo brake package and 19-inch BBS wheels.
Those upgrades are mirrored by the tS’ flashier exterior modifications, which include a blacked-out and STI emblazoned grille, front and rear STI diffusers, and cherry red pinstriping. Inside, it’s much of the same story. The Forester sports STI badging on the speedometer, starter button, gear knob, steering wheel, seats, and inside the door sills – just incase you forget what car you’re in.

However, the sporty Forester tS isn’t without its oddities. Subaru equips all tS models with its zippy 2.0-liter flat-four and all-wheel drive, but only offers a lineartronic CVT transmission to gingerly slap that power around, sorry self-shifters. And although Japanese customers can order one right this minute, Subaru hasn’t revealed how much of a power boost its tuned ECU will allot, if any.
As of now, there appear to be no plans to bring this Forester-on-an-STI diet to the US, though if Subaru does, we can assume that perpetually late college professors from New England will snap up every last one…that is if they can get rid of their current one. The Forester tS retails for 4,027,778 yen, or around $34,200.
