Tesla vs Mercedes: Who Wins in a Drag Race?
A Tesla Model S P85 recently took on a Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 in a 1/4 mile drag race pitting a powerful V8 against an electric to show that it's not all about horsepower. Both of these cars are undeniably fast, but does the more powerful Mercedes leave the Tesla in its dust or does the electric hold its own? It's hard to understand just how fast an electric car can move until you're behind the wheel, as this Tesla proves in under 13 seconds. Its 85 kWh battery provides 416 horsepower and 443 lb-feet of torque that would ordinarily make this matchup a sure thing for the Mercedes. But this is an electric car, so it's a whole new ballgame. The Mercedes looks much better on paper with a twin-turbocharged V8 putting out 536 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque: numbers that put the Tesla to shame. That all changes the minute the Tesla owner mashes on the gas pedal and leaps ahead of the Mercedes.
Still, that Mercedes might start slow, but all that extra power eventually takes over and the Tesla isn't assured of a win. Will horsepower win out over the instantaneous speed granted by an electric engine? Watch the video for your answer and don't miss the vanity plate on the Tesla.
