In a world where SUVs are a growing trend, with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Land Rover Defender or Jeep Wrangler among the most desirable, the Mitsubishi Montero, as well as its 'sportier' version, the Montero Sport, are sure to still stir your memories.

After all, they were two SUVs that were very popular in markets around the globe and which, unfortunately, are not offered in European markets, although in their day they allowed Mitsubishi to 'fight' against Toyota and its Land Cruiser, among others.

Known in the rest of the world as the Pajero, there are other countries where the Montero Sport is still sold today, at a price that could be described as interesting, as it is cheaper than what it costs to buy a Land Cruiser in Europe today... although, yes, a lot more than what one of the cheapest SUVs in Europe such as the Suzuki Jimny used to cost.

A diesel-powered SUV

We are talking, for example, about Brazil, where this Mitsubishi has arrived at dealers with a range update in which the exclusive special series Legend Black is consolidated within the family as another finish.

On sale in the HPE, HPE-S, Legend and  Legend Black trims, the Pajero Sport retains the mechanicals, but has a slightly updated look; something that is particularly noticeable on the front end.

On the personalisation front, the colour range comprises four options, White Diamond, Graphite Gray Metallic, Jet Black Mica and the new Blade Silver Metallic, while the wheel rim catalogue includes options ranging from 18 to 20 inches.

Inside, features a redesigned multifunction steering wheel with a three-spoke structure, and the seven seats in the cabin receive new leather upholstery in a choice of two colours - black or beige.

In terms of comfort, the first two rows of seats are electrically adjustable and heated, while the Legend version and above are fitted with an 8-inch digital display.

As usual for the model, and in keeping with the 4x4 recipe, under the bonnet is the classic 2.4 turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with 190 PS at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm.

In keeping with a model that ensures great off-road qualities, the engine is always combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive, a reduction gearbox and rear differential lock.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (that's its official name) is on sale in Brazil from 349,990 reais, the equivalent of around £47,000 at current exchange rates. A figure that, as we have already mentioned, is more attractive than the £74,995 from which the Land Cruiser currently starts in the UK.
