Tesla May Sell Its 50,000th Model S By The End Of The Month
Tesla could hit a milestone at the end of the month, selling its 50,000th Model S. This is an impressive number, even more so because back in January they sold their 25,000th Model S meaning they've double the lifetime sales of the model in just 9 months. Clearly, this isn't the same kind of volume that more mainstream and more affordable vehicles post, but using the much more affordable Nissan Leaf as comparison, the speed at which they're hitting this number is pretty fast. The Leaf sold its 50,000th unit after 26 months back in February. The Tesla is now set to do the same in 27 months. PHOTOS: See the 2015 Tesla Model R Concept
Tesla selling this many cars isn't just good news for Tesla, but good news for electric vehicles. Especially the speed at which it sold those last 25,000 cars shows that the public is rapidly buying into electric vehicle technology rather than deciding it's a passing fad or something that just isn't worth owning yet.
The exact timing on that 50,000th car is a little hard to predict because of how Tesla releases its sales figures. Rather than monthly, they release that data quarterly. According to Hybrid Cars, the last number anyone has is 49,928 through the end of September which should put them on track for 51,300 by November 1st.
