Weird and Wonderful MG SV-R Sports Car Goes up for Auction
Back in the early 2000s, MG was building cars like the ZR, the ZS and the ZT, essentially retuned and rebadged versions of already dowdy Rover models. Not exactly the runaway sales success MG needed. As such, MG Rover closed its factory doors in 2005, but not before throwing one long Hail Mary pass into the annals of muscle car history. True to form, the MG SV also started life as another car, specifically the Italian Qvale Mangusta (previously the DeTomaso Bigua), which was acquired by MG Rover in 2003. Production had its own quirky twist as well. The two-door coupe’s carbon fiber body components were constructed in the UK, shipped to Italy to be pressed into full body panels and attached to the SV’s steel chassis, and then once again sent back to MG’s Longbridge plant in the UK for final assembly.
Inside, the SV-R sports a bevy of black leather, brushed aluminum and raw carbon fiber affixed to the console and dashboard, along with racy Recaro seats and four-point racing harnesses.

At this point you’re saying, “So what, it looks like a Mustang that crashed into a wheel arch factory and ended up with a Dodge Neon grille in the scuffle.” While you’d be about half right, the SV-R is a bit more than that.
It’s an absolute screamer. Underneath, MG fitted the SV-R with a whopping 5.0-liter V8, good for delivering 380-horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. The sprint from zero to 60mph was disposed of in 4.8 seconds with top speed reached at an eye-watering 175mph. Most SV-R’s came equipped with five-speed manuals, as this one has, though a handful of automatics were produced.

But generally speaking, MG Rover only conceived a handful of SV coupes in entirety, reportedly around 50 cars (42 5.0-liter SV-R models). As such, the SV-R sported an absolutely sky-high price tag when new - £83,000 for this model in 2004 (around $149,000).
And now after 10 years on the trot, presumably spent disrupting quaint British villages with raucous burnouts, you can bid on this ’04 MG SV-R with only 6,191 miles when it crosses the block at the Silverstone Auctions NEC Classic Motor Show Sale on November 15th. Estimated auction price? Around $48,000.
