In a rather surprising announcement, Bugatti’s marketing boss Dr Stefan Brungs has told Autocar there aren’t any plans to chop off the roof of the Chiron. The reveal was made earlier this week during the inauguration of Bugatti’s fancy dealership in the Berkley Square area of Mayfair in London. While the Veyron received Grand Sport and Grand Sport Vitesse targa-topped models, that won’t be the case with its successor since Brungs clearly specified the Chiron will not serve as foundation for a convertible or a roadster.
However, he did mention Bugatti is analyzing the prospects of coming out with different types of derivatives for the Chiron, but for the moment they’re focusing on selling all of the 500 coupes planned for production. So far, 15 of them are heading to United Kingdom to high-end customers that have agreed to pay at least the hefty £1.9 million starting price. On top of that, U.K. buyers are adding on average more than £250,000 worth of optional kit, because obviously a standard Chiron is not impressive enough.
Brungs also told Autocar that Bugatti has indeed plans to break the world speed record for a production car in 2018. He didn’t go into any details, but most likely the attempt will take place at the same 13-mile Ehra-Lessien facility where the Veyron Super Sport hit 268 mph (431 kph) back in July 2010 in the hands of Pierre-Henri Raphanel. To be fair, that one was an unrestricted version of the Veyron Super Sport, whereas the World Record Edition (WRE) sold to just five customers was electronically-capped at 258 mph (415 kph) to protect the tires.
