Retro-Tastic Atomic Camper is a Slice of Pure Awesome
This incredible retro-style camper is the work of Bill Guernsey who built his bright red rocket camper over the course of two years. We're not talking two years of tinkering in his off time, but two years of working on this thing for about six hours a day, six days a week. All those hours paid off with what is the coolest camper on the road. It all started when Guernsey was seriously injured in a plane crash. He managed to fracture seven ribs and break his back in three places, which meant he was in for a very long, hard recovery. That's when he started building the Atomic Camper to give him something to do during that time to keep busy. PHOTOS: Check Out the Rugged 2013 EarthRoamer XV-LT
It might look like it should be nuclear powered, but it's actually solar, and includes a full bathroom, kitchen and a shower. Inside there's a fantastic level of detail with magazine covers from the '50s and '60s decorating the walls and steampunk touches created with parts from an Erector Set.
Guernsey and his wife travel all over Southcentral Alaska in his creation, and not that it's complete, he's got some other projects in the pipeline. He told Alaska Dispatch News, "I want to build another camper -- a 24-foot zeppelin. When I do it, I’ll do a lot differently -- it’ll be a cylinder. I’ll stretch it. It will be longer and bigger. I want it to look like it’s manufactured. And it will have an infrared camera -- to see the bear in the dark."
