Is The Ford GT Making a Comeback?
Ford has been out of the high-end touring sports car game since the Ford GT went off the market in 2007. But lately, rumors have been spreading that not only will the GT be back in the Ford lineup, but the whole brand will be heading back to Le Mans in 2016. Road & Track reports that after Ford killed a GTE-spec Mustang, the company’s racing chief made it known he liked the idea of prepping some engines for the P2 class at the storied 24-hour endurance race. That would likely be in the form of a new GT. RELATED: See Photos of the 2005 Ford GT
With 2016 marking the 50th anniversary of Ford’s GT40 Mk II scoring a victory at Le Mans, it makes sense that the company would want to return to Le Mans. And with Chevrolet making news with the new Corvette Z06 and Ford having nothing that can compete, well, maybe it’s time for another slick grand tourer that can carry on the GT’s legacy.
Details are sparse, but we’d guess that power might come from an EcoBoost engine, probably a V6. If these reports are right, there's a pretty solid chance we'll find out about the new GT sometime next year. Detroit, maybe? We'll keep our fingers crossed.
