Watch as the McLaren 650S GT3 Breaks Cover, Sounds Terrifying
Promotional videos have the nasty ability to make any car, no matter how banal, into a fire-breathing monster. We’re not saying that’s the case here, but on shock value alone, McLaren’s new teaser for the GT3 sets it up to be the fastest, most raucous race car ever. Last seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, this is the all-new McLaren 650S GT3— the racing firm’s dramatic entry into top-level GT championships for 2015 and the replacement for the aging 12C racer. Gone are all the 12C body bits, though underneath its new 650S suit reside some familiar McLaren components. The 12C’s carbon monocoque chassis has been strengthened, suspension geometry completely revised, cockpit layout reworked, and powertrain revamped.
The 650S GT3 produces around 493 horsepower, the same as the 12C GT3, through its ubiquitous 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 and puts it to the ground via a new six-speed sequential gearbox. Like the road-going 650S itself, it’s more of a "best of collection" than a debut album.

But that doesn’t mean it won’t be shockingly quick. The 12C GT3 nabbed three championship titles and 51 race wins over the last three seasons, and we have no reason to believe a few 650S enhancements will slow it down.
McLaren will reportedly sell 15 examples for competition in the 2015 race season, priced at around $535,000. Be afraid, small creatures of the forest … be very afraid.
