Ford's Performance Division Might Be Called "999"
Ford has a lot of different ways of identifying its performance cars, but it has usually come down to some combination of letters. ST, GT, RS, SVO and SVT have all been used, but now they're looking at giving their performance division a new name that's all about the numbers. Jalopnik is reporting that there was a recent focus group which was tasked with evaluating people's feelings on the 999 moniker. Ford's Special Vehicle Teams (SVT) is the division that currently handles performance vehicles, so presumably their name would change. PHOTOS: See More of the New 2015 Ford Mustang GT
It might seem like they've pulled 999 out of nowhere, but it's actually got a very long history with Ford. Their very first race car was called the Ford 999 and although that was way back at the turn of the 20th century, it still marks the beginning of a long line of performance cars from Ford.
It makes sense if you're in the know, but most people admittedly aren't going to have any idea why they picked the name. Where SVT stands for something, 999 is going to require a bit more explaining. Wonder how the focus group felt about the possible name? And how long do you think it'll be before someone pries off the 999 badge, turns it upside down, and sends an entirely different message?
