'Guardians of the Galaxy' Star Chris Pratt Got His Break While Living in a Van
You might know him as the lovable Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation. Or, if you were anywhere near a movie theater this weekend, you might know him as Star-Lord from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. However you know him, Chris Pratt is quickly becoming one of the silver screen's favorite leading men. But it wasn’t always big time roles and big time muscles for Hollywood's latest obsession. A college dropout originally from Lake Stevens, Washington, Pratt moved to Maui and lived with a buddy on the beach surviving out of a van. “We just drank and smoked weed and worked minimal hours,” Pratt told The Independent in a recent interview. “Just enough to cover gas, food and fishing supplies.”
It was while living out of a van, and working as a waiter at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Maui, where he was noticed by actress and director Rae Dawn Chong (ironically the daughter of Tommy Chong, who knows a thing or two about living for weed). Then and there he was given an opportunity to act in a small time movie called Cursed Part 3: Pratt’s first big break in showbiz.

From there he went to star in shows like Parks and Rec along with a small movie roles. And today, he’s married to actress Anna Faris and starring in big time spots like Guardians of the Galaxy, and in next year's Jurassic World. While I doubt Pratt wants to go back to his days of smoking weed and living in a van, he does admit that “[Maui’s] a pretty awesome place to be homeless."
