Luxury Powerboat Will Use Legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin Engine
We like to celebrate when an automaker can artfully blend aspects of old and new in one vehicle. But it is perhaps even more perfect when a boat is created that accomplishes this combination. A terrific example is this modern luxury speed boat, powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.
It is called the Aeroboat, and despite its sleek, modern lines, it is motivated by historically classic power. The Merlin V12 engine that resides in the rear of the boat is the very same line that powered the iconic Spitfire fighter plane of the Royal Air Force in WWII.
For the Aeroboat, the Merlin has been detuned to put out an immense 1,100 horsepower. This is enough to get the Aeroboat up to projected speeds of 75-95 knots (86-109 mph).
The design of the Aeroboat takes cues from the iconic Spitfire aircraft. Elements of the Spitfire’s wing, air intake and landing gear are incorporated into the Aeroboat in various ways. The throttle and switchgear of this powerboat are inspired by the controls of the Spitfire.
Price was not given, but 12 Aeroboats will be built, and to the exact specification of the owner. We can’t wait to see this vehicle come to fruition– and find out how much it costs when it’s ready!
