Mitsubishi 3000GT May Return as Evo Replacement
We are truly in the age of born-again Japanese sportscars. The NSX, the GT 86, the Supra — and now, rumor has it that Mitsubishi may bring back the beloved 3000GT to replace the soon-to-be deceased Evo. Or at least, a spiritual successor to it anyways. With Mitsubishi announcing the end of the line for its Lancer Evolution this year, new reports from Auto Express suggest that this new 2+2 sportscar may be on the way sooner than later. “It’s possible it could be a high performance coupe — smaller rather than bigger than the current Evo. Therefore a 2+2 coupe would be a sensible body choice,” said Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors UK Lance Bradley.
Of course, there’s no solid evidence backing these statements, nor do we have any idea what would power this beautiful beast. But, with the Nissan GT-R and Acura NSX both likely to sport hybrid powertrains, we wouldn’t expect anything less from a 3000GT/Evo successor. Although, Mitsubishi would have to move fast in order to be able to compete with these cars within the next two years or so.

Either way, a 3000GT successor does sound enticing. Let’s just hope it stays true to its performance roots.
