JFK Continental Sells at Auction for $318K

The Lincoln Continental used to transport President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to their flight from Fort Worth to Dallas in November of 1963, sold for $318,000. The transaction took place on Thursday, according to RR Auction, an Amherst, New Hampshire auction house. The white 1963 Continental was used to transport President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Texas governor John Connally from a breakfast and a speech at the Hotel Texas ballroom, through the streets of Fort Worth to Carswell Air Force Base, where they boarded their short flight to Dallas on the morning of November 22, 1963. The Continental was painstakingly restored by Lincoln specialist Baker Restoration of Putnam, Connecticut. The restoration included engine overhaul, body and paint work. Most of the interior, including the red leather seats, is in its original condition. A 1960 Continental Mark V limousine from President Kennedy’s Washington, D.C. motor pool, was also included in the JFK-themed auction. It sold for $210,000. The four-door armored limousine features a divider window, passenger air controls, power steering and brakes, and a two-way telephone in the back seat. Much of the body has been restored, at a cost of $35,000. The interior remains in its original condition, with beige leather seats and matching carpet. Jim Warlick, owner of the America Presidential Experience, a unique traveling presentation of exhibits that celebrates and brings to life the American presidency, purchased both vehicles. Warlick plans to add them to his traveling exhibit and said that they can be seen in upcoming special JFK 50th Anniversary commemoration event at Love Field in Dallas, Texas. Other items sold at the auction include: - Lee Harvey Oswald's wedding ring for $108,000 - A pair of emblem-adorned rotary phones from the presidential suite at the Hotel Texas— which Kennedy used to make his final phone call, for $31,200.
