Toyota Planning FR-S-Based Sedan?
If you have't already noticed, Toyota is on the path to injecting some life into its largely lackluster portfolio of vehicles. But the GT 86 (FR-S), may have only been the first step in a larger rollout of fun-to-drive cars with new rumors of a sporty sedan. A source at Toyota told Motoring.com.au that — following in the success of the 86 — execs have plans for a sedan based on the much-loved sportscar. This coming after news that plans for the GT 86 convertible have been put on the back burner.
With a base 10mm longer than the standard 86, Toyota says that the new sedan will sport a "keen-look" grille, replicating the shape of a Japanese 'katana' Samurai sword. Similar designs can be seen on the current FR-S and even the Corolla.
Power will still be sourced from the same 2.0-liter boxer engine found on the current 86, with a hybrid powertrain also expected. With the use of the Subaru boxer engine, a Subie sports sedan could also be in the works, likely in the form of the next-gen WRX.
Unfortunately, we won't see this new sports sedan anytime in 2013. Sources say that we can expect the unnamed 86 four-door at next year's Geneva Auto Show in March, with production slated for 2015 or 2016.
