911-Rivaling Mercedes-Benz GT Spied Testing

Any time we learn that a brand steeped in racing history is working on a new sportscar, it is cause for celebration. Mercedes-Benz is an automaker with a rich motorsport lineage (including a long past in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is being run this weekend), and its performance wing appears to be working on a new sportscar to rival the Porsche 911. These spy shots from Germany's Auto Bild magazine show a sports coupe being tested in Affalterbach, which is the hometown of Mercedes-Benz's AMG division. The shots show a a low, wide coupe, that finishes quickly at the aft. This vehicle appears to have similar proportions to the SLS AMG but on a smaller scale. That would put this vehicle squarely Porsche 911 range. Reports suggest that it could come equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 and cost anywhere from €109,000 to 145,000 ($143,180-$190,470). Why the inclusion of such a vehicle into the Mercedes-AMG lineup? The SL-Class slots under the SLS AMG but it is more of a grand tourer, and the smaller SLK (even in AMG-guise) is aimed more at the Boxster/Cayman. If it is an AMG-dedicated model (like the SLS-AMG) it would make for a very compelling sports coupe- one that could put the performance motoring world on notice!
