Five Reasons Why Concours Rock
We here at BoldRide recently got a little testy regarding the ways in which Concours events are not all that they are cracked up to be, but let's be serious- there is a reason that people attend these things in droves. This past weekend featured one of the key events on the automotive calendar; The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. So good was this show, that we decided to take a look at the pros of Concours events. 1.) These are THE BEST cars that that are a day’s drive away:
Show up at a Cars and Coffee event and there is a potential that you may run into a Ferrari or two. Come to a Concours on the other hand, and not only will you see plenty of Ferraris, but everything else under the sun. Maserati? Check. Bentley? Tons of ‘em. Oh and then this show-stopping Delahaye (above), represent just the tip of the automotive iceberg, but be prepared because…
2.) You’re going to have your automotive knowledge tested:
If you are tired of seeing the same old Corvette and would like to overturn the mossy stones of the automotive world, a Concours event is the place to do it at. Where else would you see an Aston Martin V8 Zagato, or all manner of Tatra or Trabant(above)? If you go to a Concours event, you will guess wrong on the make and model of more than a few cars. This is the way that I became the authority on strange cars. When I found a car that I did know about, I learned as much as I could about a car. I still do.
3.) It’s not as serious as you think:
Concours events get a reputation for being stuffy and way too serious about itself. Sure, those folks may be around, and we’ve addressed that, but to say that all who attend are wound up tighter than a bowline knot is to disservice the thousands that attend these shows every year. A lot of these guys have a great sense of humor and humility about their cars and make great efforts to get people involved.
4.) And when people do take it serious, it is in the best ways possible:
Perhaps not serious, but rather committed. Look at the owner of this BMW motorcycle-and-Isetta combination. Not only is this an incredible arrangement, and in impeccable condition, but look at the owner (background, right) wearing an authentic, period-appropriate police outfit. People go to great lengths to show off their passion for not just the automobile, but also the context in which that vehicle existed. The above image is perfect evidence of that.
5.) It continues to Foster New Car Enthusiasts:
One generally thinks that you have to be a little tike to first catch the car bug; Seeing a sportscar whisk by, all young and wide-eyed. But a Concours is a place where an adult who has never really understood much about cars other than how to reset the stereo’s clock, can be inspired to take up a life of automotive enthusiasm. Sitting in traffic may instill the status quo for the automobile, but at a Concours, you can truly understand just how impressive, beautiful, and downright special a car can be. For everything drab about daily motoring, the Concours is the antitheses.
Want to learn all you can about the Corvette? That’s great, but if you really want to test the limits of your automotive appreciation- go to a Concours, and step up your game.
