SSC Tuatara Inching Closer to Production; 1,350 HP, 275 MPH
We originally saw the Tuatara some time ago as the ultra-exclusive, high-powered concept which was aiming for the top speed crown. Since then, SSC North America (formerly Shelby Supercars) went through a name change, all the while hard at work prepping the Tuatara for production. Thankfully, it's almost here. Almost. The 423 cu.in. twin-turbo V8 was recently rated at a monstrous 1,350-hp on the dyno by SSC engineers. Which is more than the Bugatti Veyron, in case you forgot. And SSC also says that if you're not "buffered by regulations," on premium 91 octane fuel the engine is "easily capable" of 1,700-hp and speeds over 275 mph. Um, holy shit.
Aside from scary amounts of power, SSC founder and lead designer Jerod Shelby promises, "it can easily be driven on a daily basis in any climate or environment in the world and at the same time can roll out of the pit area onto a track like Nurburgring." A 1,350-hp daily driver? We'll believe it when we see it. PHOTOS: See more of the SSC Tuatara
