Odd Ride: Looking Back on the 2007 DiMora XJ Coupe Concept

Every once in a while, it does us well to see when designs do not work, so that we have the context to better appreciate designs that are effective. And for every BMW M9 Concept, there is this- the 2007 DiMora XJ Coupe Concept, by DiMora Designs. DiMora is a designer of yachts, motorcycles, and other projects, but perhaps they should leave automobiles to the pros. We love us some imrpovised 'utes, but this is thing is just too weird for us. Perhaps it is because DiMora started with a 1999 Chrysler Concorde for a 2007 concept. Forget that the car was already eight years old, but it was a shitty car. The notion was noble enough; create a 'luxury' coupe with a large trunk, and the electric open-close lid is certainly large. But at the end of the day, it is a chopped Chrysler Concorde. DiMora said of this concept that it was an exercise in restoring the art of American coach-building  Perhaps he his referring to the 1920's when designers would make specialty, one-off bodies for each individual car sold. Here is the problem- those cars were Rolls-Royces, not Chryslers. Just remember that the next time you want to recapture the essence of highlights of our motoring past.
