2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG is Small, Pretty and Powerful
The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class has been abuzz within the automotive world. Fetching good looks and the promise of compact power have made the CLA the darling of the auto show circuit as of late. At the New York Auto Show, we finally got to see the hottest version of everyone's favorite diminutive M-B sedan, the CLA45 AMG. The sub-AMG CLA250 features a turbocharged 2-liter inline-4 making 208 horsepower. This had us thinking- what would Mercedes fit under the fit under the hood of the AMG? A V6 seemed to blunt an object, but there isn't a whole lot more power you can wring out of a four-cylinder without boosting the turbocharger through the roof. The mad scientists at AMG decided on the latter, turbocharging the 2-liter engine to an impressive 355 horsepower. Mercedes-Benz calls it the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine on the planet. Power is sent through a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, operated via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. It routs power to 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The whole package works together to get the CLA45 from zero to sixty in just 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.
Most notable about the CLA's engine is its power to specific displacement. While many supercar makers prattle on about that ratio, they would do a double-take at the 187 horsepower-per-liter from the CLA45. That's nuts. We'll be driving the CLA45 AMG later this spring, and we'll have all the dirty details on how it drives when we do!
