BMW Adds Motorcycle Electric Engine to i3
The newest model in development by BMW is the i3 electric vehicle, which currently has a range of 60-90 miles, in all-electric use. However, with all the recent advances by other automakers in this field of electric vehicle modifications, the German manufacturer has to come up with a better alternative for its i3 model. To do this BMW, is looking to integrate one of its motorcycle electric engines– an inline twin-cylinder engine at 600cc. This smaller, more lightweight component with allow the i3 to go as far 250 miles on electric only, nearly quadrupling its prior range. Even though that range may be less than some current hybrid models, or the gas-powered city vehicles like the Scion IQ, the higher range is far more important for an electric-only vehicle compared to even a hybrid. BMW highly anticipates that about half of those who purchase the i3 pure-electric city vehicle will opt for the higher range inline two-cylinder. That number could eventually dwindle to 20-30 percent by the end of its initial purchase surge. There isn't an exact date on when, and how many of these i3 models will be manufactured. One thing is for certain; BMW will do very little complaining if the i3 is of relatively high demand for many in North America's Urban setting. The automaker would be relatively surprised if many continue to opt for the smaller, more efficient range extender.
Additionally, BMW and Japanese automaker Toyota have announced that they are teaming up to engineer what they call “lithium-air”. It is a new electric battery technology which will utilize the oxygen in the air to properly regenerate and partially power the battery. The only downside is if this becomes a very popular vehicle and technology, we could all be without oxygen really fast! (Joking of course, but wouldn't that be a funny problem?)
