Rant: How Much Power is Too Much Power?
Welcome to the future everyone, glad you could make it. Remember back, say, 30 years ago when 400-, 500-hp was a shot to the moon and back for automakers? Yeah, well, times have changed. Lately, automakers, tuners, and people with too much time on their hands, are claiming everything from 2,800-hp people murdering hypercars, to 288 mph Bugatti's that will run out of gas if you look at them funny. If we're being honest though, it's all just sort of ridiculous. Where is the finesse? Where is the engineering? Since when did 300 mph and 2,000-hp equal the greatest car ever built? Companies like Bugatti and Hennessey are butting heads yet again for the "world's fastest" title, but sheer speed overpowers any other performance capabilities these cars might have. Has anyone ever seen these two on a track? You know, with real turns? It's not a common site. PHOTOS: See More of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Gran Sport World Record Car
Bugatti, Porsche, McLaren, Hennessey — all are in a rat race to see who can get to 60 first and who can reach 270 mph.
Of course, you can shove 1,000-hp in a Mustang, or 2,000-hp in a Lamborghini, and pay close to $1- or $2 million — but is it really worth it? Sure, if you enjoy spending your life in fear. Or, you could save yourself a million or two and pick up an FR-S, GTI or 5.0 and you'll have loads more fun than any 300 mph satan car, I guarantee it.
