Around the World in 80 eDays: Tesla Roadster Completes Electric Drive Global Challenge
Encompassing nearly 16,300 miles of driving, spanning over 17 different countries and suffering what we assume to be a healthy heaping of range anxiety, a Barcelona based team just recently completed what they are calling “the first 100% electric car around the world race.” Originated by two French engineers in 2010, they hoped to be the first to attack the globe in their Citroen C-Zero. But like any good Spaniards, a Barcelona based team did Christopher Columbus justice and took up the challenge making it their own. Headed by Spanish entrepreneur Rafael de Mestre, he guaranteed-along with the Tesla Roadster- that he would be the first to finish the worldwide EV race.
Leaving his Barcelona home, along with a team of his own, de Mestre managed to surpass the French just a few hundred miles north of their starting point, leading to the modern day explorers world record journey. Finding themselves amidst various world locations the team said that charging points were not always readily available and often required makeshift chargers powered by generators. He even experienced two severe crashes along the way thanking the Tesla engineers for “world record repairing.” http://youtu.be/Vi7OXxOMBWQ Although not originating the challenge, in only 80 days, the Spanish Tesla team headed by de Mestre was officially credited as the winner of global EV event, while the French team took the more scenic route to finish in just over 8 months.
