The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen and the Man Who Took It Around the World
Gunther Holtorf is not your typical Mercedes-Benz SUV driver. Though he may be behind the wheel of a Mercedes Geländewagen, he's not a rapper, soccer star, soccer mom or a fashion entrepreneur. No, Gunther Holtorf is a retired German airline executive with an affectionate personality and an unquenchable thirst for travel. With the help of his wife, he turned his 461 series G-wagen into the ultimate all terrain RV. Over the course of 23 years, he's crisscrossed the globe, covering over 500,000 miles in search of adventure. There are men, and then there's Gunther Holtorf.
Many have crossed continents, or lapped the world. At the end of their excursion they might open a bottle of champagne, wipe the constant threat of death from their brow, and celebrate with friends, family and the media. They may even smoke a cigar. But you have to wonder, did they do it for the glory, or were they trying to satisfy their natural inclination to wander?
Which is what makes Gunther's story so compelling, he took on the world with only his wife, and the bullet proof engineering of his Mercedes-Benz G-wagon. For the better part of 23 years, no one knew who Gunther Holtorf was. Without a corporate sponsor, blog, twitter account or any desire to promote themselves, the couple simply drove around in their beloved Otto soaking up the world in and its splendor. That’s it. Fate has a funny way of working; this slideshow made with the help of David Lemke has gone viral: http://vimeo.com/46284677
