Audi is getting ready to challenge the latest BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Audi is hard at work developing a replacement for the aging A8, and a new spy video lets us see the upcoming luxury sedan in motion.
Like earlier spy shots indicate, the new A8 takes major inspiration from the Prologue concept. The camouflage can’t hide the sedan’s broad grille and angular headlights. The roof also arcs downward at the back, which gives the four-door a coupe-like appearance.
The A8 is quiet and composed in this clip. Even when driving on the Nürburgring, the sedan just cruises around. The vehicle looks like it would offer a very comfy ride, though.
The A8 needs to compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so Audi intends to make the new sedan a technological powerhouse. The four-door’s semi-autonomous system can reportedly drive it at low speeds. Inside, drivers use the Virtual Cockpit instrument panel display and upgraded MMI with an OLED screen.
The new A8 should lose some weight by switching to Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform, and customers have a wide array of engines to choose from. The options reportedly include a biturbo 6.0-liter W12, a 4.0-liter diesel V8 with an electric turbocharger, a diesel V6, a hybrid, and possibly even a fully electric powertrain.
Audi says the new A8 is due in 2017, and we expect it to debut next year at Geneva or Frankfurt. Eventually, the new model might spawn an even more luxurious version to challenge the Mercedes-Maybach range and a coupe to go against the S-Class Coupe.
