Mercedes' hardcore G-Class is finally coming to America. Look for it to arrive in early 2017.

I'm not usually the type to say I told you so, but I told you so. Mercedes-Benz will officially sell the badass G500 4x4² in the U.S. starting early next year, though to keep it in line with the rest of the G-Class' American naming structure, it'll wear the G550 moniker.

That looks to be the only real change, though. And thank goodness – there's nothing wrong with the 4x4² as I see it. Under the hood, Mercedes employs its biturbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (that sounds awesome, by the way) with 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. In terms of off-road prowess, the 4x4² is way more capable than even the standard (but already tough) G550. Approach and departure angles are increased by 21.6 and 13.8 degrees, respectively. Breakover angle is increased by 23.4 degrees, ground clearance is up by 7.9 inches, and the SUV’s fording depth is improved by a massive 15.8 inches. So yeah, it’ll pretty much ford Lake Erie if you ask it to.

Pricing isn't confirmed as of this writing, but we'll have that around the SUV's official on-sale date early next year. Now, Mercedes, go ahead and shove one of the AMG engines under the hood of this thing. I mean, you've already gone this far...
