To rival the Abarth 595.
Currently, the most powerful version of the revised Volkswagen up! has 89 horsepower (66 kilowatts) and 118 pound-feet (160 newton meters) of torque, but that’s about to change if we are to believe a new report from Autocar.
The British magazine says the German company is working on a hot GTI variant of the city car that will be powered by a 1.0-liter engine, tuned to deliver around 115 hp (85 kW) and 147 lb-ft of torque (199 Nm). This will provide a pretty decent acceleration for the sub-2,205 pound (1,000 kilograms) car, as preliminary details show a 0-60 miles per hour (0-98 kilometers per hour) sprint in 8.0 seconds.
As a typical product of Volkswagen Group, the new model will be offered to customers with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Of course, the engine and the optimized transmission won’t be the only improvements for the range-topping up!, as it will also get retuned chassis with lowered ride height.
In addition, expect some distinctive exterior styling revisions, matching the added power. Expected to hit the market in both three- and five-door body styles, the up! GTI will arrive with 16-inch wheels with 205/40 tires, wider sills, twin chrome tailpipes, and new bumpers.
Supporting the “affordable performance” motto, the new model will be priced at around $21,000, if the information from Autocar is correct. While this is not exactly what we would call affordable, the up! GTI will rival the Abarth 595, which has a starting price of $26,066 in the U.K.
