Famous Italian design house Pininfarina could introduce a high-performance electric vehicle in the years to come.

Pininfarina’s financial problems should be over by now taking into account Tech Mahindra Limited and Mahindra & Mahindra recently acquired a 76.06-percent controlling stake. This means the legendary design house can now focus on feasible projects and apparently an all-electric sports car is a top priority if we were to rely on a report published by Autocar today.

With Mahindra’s involvement in Formula E, it would not come as a surprise to see a road-going, Pininfarina-styled EV since some of the technology could be adapted from the zero-emissions race car. The hydrogen-powered H2 Speed concept introduced earlier this year in Geneva showed Pininfarina’s interest in alternatively-powered performance cars and with Mahindra’s backing it could actually materialize sooner or later.

Meanwhile, Mahindra automotive boss Pravin Shah says the company wants to create a “unique business proposition in the area of automobiles, in the area of racing, in the area of changing design perceptions” now that Pininfarina is part of its business portfolio. Chairman Anand Mahindra described styling as being “critical to the industry” which is why he hopes the Indian automaker will take full advantage of Pininfarina’s expertise to come up with more appealing designs for its cars as a way to increase sales.
