Concept pays tribute to the 2002 turbo.

BMW has unveiled the 2002 Hommage concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 02 Series, the concept pays tribute to the 2002 turbo which became the "first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology."

Bearing little resemblance to the 2002, the concept features an aggressive “shark nose” front fascia with a unique twin kidney grille and a carbon fiber front spoiler.  The model also has red recovery hooks and retro-inspired headlights with golden reflectors that hint at the 02's golden anniversary.

The unique styling continues further back as designers installed bulging wheel arches which pay tribute to the homologated version of the 2002 turbo which needed extended fenders to accommodate its wider track.  A closer inspection reveals sporty side skirts, hidden door handles, and a carbon fiber band that wraps itself around the shoulderline.

Other highlights include retro-inspired LED taillights, an integrated rear spoiler, and a carbon fiber diffuser which is flanked by a four-tailpipe exhaust system.  The concept also boasts a matte and high-gloss Space Race Metal paint job and 20-inch light-alloy wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system with gold calipers.

BMW declined to release performance specifications but it's safe to assume the concept features a turbocharged powertrain.
