Spy photos show Abarth is putting the finishing touches on its spicy 500 set to arrive in the months to come.
It was back in July last year when Fiat facelifted its cute city car, but Abarth is taking its sweet time coming out with its hotter sibling. We were expecting to see it live in Geneva at the beginning of the month, but instead Abarth gave us the higher performance variant of the Fiat 124 Spider, along with its rally car derivative. This means the facelifted Abarth 500 will probably be introduced this summer and most likely it will have just about the same cosmetic tweaks as the standard 500.
Seen here are prototypes testing in Scandinavia and Italy with an extensive amount of camouflage, but the visual changes won’t be as significant as the disguise may suggest. The pocket rocket should get the regular model’s new lighting clusters while at least one set of new wheels will join the catalog. Some light cosmetic surgery to the bumpers is also in the works, along with a few minor interior changes.
Its heart and soul will continue to be the turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine which now has 140 horsepower in the 595, followed by the 595 Turismo with 160 hp, the 595 Competizione with 180 hp, and the hardcore 695 Biposto with 190 hp. It remains to be seen whether Abarth’s engineers will fiddle around with the engine to squeeze more power. Even if they do, the bump in output will be modest.
